LATTICE

From 1995 to 2005, LATTICE International Team has demonstrated an extraordinary dedication to international education at Michigan State University and the mid-Michigan community. The mission of LATTICE is to change teachers’ thinking in ways that bring global and international perspectives into their classrooms. Since 1995, MSU international students in the Lansing area have worked together with K-12 teachers and administrators from 13 school districts in Michigan to heighten awareness, sensitivity and understanding of global issues, including in particular ethnic, cultural and religious diversity.

LATTICE’s most important resources consist of (1) the experiences and cultural heritage of international students from many countries and (2) the ability of American teachers to draw upon their own diverse experiences and to connect with international students in ways that will influence their own practice. Consequently, all sessions are planned in a collaborative, non-hierarchical way by a planning team which includes international graduate students, local K-12 teachers and MSU faculty/staff from four international centers. Note, therefore, that LATTICE is NOT: (a) a short term-fix based on one-shot or occasional interventions, (b) a series of “make and take” workshops, or (c) more of the sort of professional development that teachers have found lacking in the past.

We recognize the university today in particular for its emphasis on providing international learning opportunities for students preparing to be teachers and its in-depth outreach to schools on international issues. A cornerstone of the university’s outreach to schools is its work with LATTICE (Linking All Types of Teachers to International and Cross-Cultural Education). The program convenes study groups of K-12 teachers, international graduate students and Michigan State faculty to explore international issues. LATTICE, which serves thirteen Michigan school districts, draws on the university’s rich area studies resources and diverse community to bring international perspectives into the classroom
